If you’ve already made the excellent decision to expand your home with a garden room (and add value in the process), then the next step is planning the important details and design of your project, and finding a reputable supplier who can deliver your dream.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start, so we’ve summarised our 5 top tips for buying a garden room for you below, to help to guide you through the important decisions you will now need to make (and the pitfalls to avoid!) in order to turn your dream garden room into a reality.

1. Specification is key.

When you commission a garden room supplier, what you are really doing is committing to the overall specification of your garden room. This is a very important decision as it has implications on the finish of your entire project. When you’re receiving quotes for a garden room, be sure to understand exactly what specification you will receive. When suppliers cut corners on garden rooms (especially if they are being produced in a bulk manner), it means that you will not only compromise the overall look with low-quality cladding, plastering, lighting etc, but you also compromise on the functionality of the garden room, and may find it is not well insulated and ultimately won’t stand the test of time.

2. Look everywhere for inspiration!

From Pinterest and Instagram, to home magazines, and even garden rooms your friends or neighbours have built, take inspiration from everywhere and decide which elements you love and want to be integrated into your own bespoke design. If you need a little help, ask our friendly team. We have built hundreds of garden rooms (from yoga studios to golf simulators!) so we have a few ideas which might help to guide you. If you need a little inspiration, why not look at our garden room gallery. Following a site visit, we will provide you with fully-costed bespoke designs for your garden room for you to consider.

3. Garden rooms don’t need to be rectangular (unless you want them to be!).

Think about how you will want to live in your space and work backwards from there. By creating a bespoke design that is individually tailored to suit you, you’ll ensure that you get the very most out of your investment and the space will work in harmony with your lifestyle. For example, you may wish to integrate hidden storage solutions, reinforced flooring, a wet room, extra windows or doors, or any else you can dream of. Don’t fall into the trap of buying off-the-shelf when your garden room should be as unique as you are!

4. Find out what kind of permission you need to build your vision.

This will vary from project to project and will depend on all kinds of variables such as the Permitted Development rights on your property, as well as how the garden room will be used, it’s size and proximity to the boundary. Our 10+ years of garden room development means we have worked on projects of all shapes and sizes, and therefore can provide helpful tips and advice for your project. We also provide a Planning Administration Service, which is available at a fee. As we are garden room experts, not planning consultants, we would always recommend that clients seek independent planning advice to ensure that the project adheres to all requirements.

5. Choose a company who knows what they’re doing.
