Working from home can be a challenge at the best of times, but when multiple members of the household are forced into home-working overnight, throw in some home schooling and it can quickly become a chaotic, non-productive environment for work. When our recent customer Jamie contacted us in Winter 2021, himself and his wife were sharing their dining room as a work space. Not only did this take up a valuable room in their family home, but with them both having to be on respective calls and Zoom meetings whilst working in the same room, it was only a matter of time before they needed a more permanent solution.

Their seaside home in Margate, Kent already had and old concrete lean-to garage which occupied the side access to the garden. The first step was to safely demolish this, along with an old patio, to clear the way for their new bespoke garden office. eDEN called upon the skills of our partner groundworks company who swiftly removed the garage. Jamie commented “despite clearing a very significant structure, you really wouldn’t have known they were there. They cleared everything with minimal disruption and were a fantastic recommendation from eDEN”

Our original site visit at Jamie’s property was in November 2021, and wanting a quick turnaround we quickly got on to scheduling a build slot and the site clearance. “I couldn’t believe that in just two and a half months from that first visit, we have this lovely finished space” Jamie told us.

One of the challenges in this property was its tricky position close to a roundabout on a busy main road in Margate, which meant delivery of large items wouldn’t be easy. Jamie explained that he was impressed how the team arranged alternatives, making the process work smoothly for his property and without any input required from himself.

The 5m x 2.5m tailor-made garden office was built to a 2.5m height to comply with permitted development, which meant no planning was required, and was designed to work as an open-plan multi-use space. With one large set of aluminium framed sliding doors, the layout of the furniture divides the room into office and chill-out partitioned with a comfy sofa, so all the family can make use of their new space.

As we were required to demolish the existing lean-to, the client needed to consider how they would recreate a boundary to keep the garden private. They requested that eDEN continue the cladding style from the studio to create a bespoke cedar gate, extending from the side of the garden room and tying in with the aesthetic of the new space. Jamie explained “Matt did an amazing job on the gate and the detailing was amazing. You would think it was machine made! He even went to the care of putting in a small slope to avoid the trip hazard from our raised patio. We were really impressed by the attention to detail and it finishes the space perfectly.”

When asked about his experience with eDEN, Jamie reported “the team worked so hard and were always excellent at communicating what was happening and when, from first enquiry to the last day on site. The build team were lovely to have around, and were even happy for our kids to come out and chat to them before school. The standard of finish, the space and the service all provided by eDEN was faultless – an A1 experience. We have now gained that room back in our home and have a dedicated space for work. It has given us the freedom to work without stress and the noise of the house which is invaluable.”
